I’ve been shooting Andy Smith’s work for about a decade now, and it is always gorgeous. But these new pieces are really over the top, in my opinion. Andy was telling me that on several of them he used as many as five individual firings in order to build up the complex, layered patterning on the surface. Over the years he has done some really complex and interesting forms, but lately he says he is returning to simpler forms, trying to make them as clean and perfect as possible. I think he’s doing it! You can see Andy’s work locally at the Piedmont Craftsmen Fair and the Carolina Designer Craftsmen show this fall.
